He's Just Sleeping

Steve has been asleep (not his choice) since Monday night, February 9. First with a tube down his throat. Now with a tube in his neck. But with many new white cells nestling in his newly grafted bone marrow.

It has been complicated, challenging and a little frightening. Okay, very frightening. But it looks as if Steve will be back blogging sometime soon. I don't know when exactly, but I'm hoping it will be by sometime next week.

With any luck, he'll focus the determination that brought him through all of this still breathing, into bringing him back to all of us wide awake and full of words.

Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts. Please keep them coming.

Mary Beth, wife of the Ex-Vampire

Oh yes, he said you still have your tan. Now we really know that all is well with you. Steve, you made it. Thank you from all of us. You've come through with flying colors. 14. Dearest Steve, Dave Jackson called us this evenng reporting that he had been at the hospital to see you. What a special friend you have. His report was great, just like Mary Beth's was last night. Yo did it my son, and thank you. It got me to remembering different occasions in our past. Remember when you had that ear surgery in New York and we stayed at my aunt Berdie's apartment until your dad came and took us back to Kingston? Than the time we went to Albany when you were 12 years old, and I stayed right across the street from the hospital. Almost forgot when you had the heart attack and Lou and I stayed in Los Angeles for a month. I even attended the classes at the hospital with you during your recovery. The other people all got to calling me Mom. Wow, my son, you are a winner and a fighter and that's why before you know it you'll be home and walking that beach again with that beautiful and loving wife of yours. Remember, I liked her the minute she came for brunch that Sunday morning. Not only are you our hero, but so is Mary Beth. Love you always, Mom

  15. Our dear Stevie,Well, you're at it again. You're talking. Great to hear your voice again. Mary Beth sounded a million times better. If you had asked us about the weather, I doubt if you would have liked our answer. We just had a big snow storm and tonight it's freezing. Aren't you happy that we moved to California 46 years ago? I hear out where you are it was 80. Malibu Beach is waiting for you, and the dolphines are waiting for MaryBeth. Keep talking......
We love you always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  21. Hi son of mine, The world is wonderful again for me. Beth called us before. She was watching Dylan L. as he slept and Marlene & Greg were visiting you. Music to my ears. A little while ago I called and spoke to Greg and Marlene at their home. Marlene couldn't stop talking about how great you are now and what a miracle. Also how great Beth is. I told her that's not new news to me. Steve, we've all been so lucky and thankful. From here on,each day is a present. We're lucky we have this wonderful future. Thank you and Beth for the courage you displayed. Your very loving mother.

  22. Dear Stevie, Another great day, you'll be having more and more of these kind of days from now on. We're sure they will start feeding you some regular food soon, lucking you. Your days will be very busy with all the therapy, but all that will lead to is your going home. Marlene & Greg were so very happy to see how well you're looking. Everyone that you know through Aunt Dottie keeps calling and asking how you're doing. She's having a ball giving them the good news. Milt is in seventh heaven now that he's spoken to you. I guess ou have affected a lot of people. Thanks for coming back to us better than ever. Love, love, love always. Mom, Milt, Aunt Dottie

  23. Dear Stevie, Sunday night and another week is ahead of you. We're sure in this week you will show even more improvement. As for the weather in the East, it too is improving. Our cousin Mollie, formerly from Buffalo, living in New York called and asked about you. Remember on our way to California we stopped there and visited Poppy's newphews and niece? She's Mollie Faber and lives in Yonkers now. A little bit of family history never hurts, right? We're thinking about you as usual, all the time. Remember to take it "one day at a time". 25. Dear Stevie, Mazol Tov!!!!!!!!!!!!What a thrill to pick up the phone and hear your voice. That "take it one day at a time" motto really works, keep it up.I called and told Aunt Dottie right away about your call, and of course she was elated. But you understand, we knew you would make it. We've known you from the beginning, right? Our rabbi called again tonght and was also very happy to hear of your progress. Judy and Joan are on the phone with Aunt Dottie each day. As I told you before, we get calls from all over, and all the prayers certainly have been answered. Have good nights and days from here on in. Mary Beth also. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  26. Dear Son of Mine, Again, you've come through a tough experience, as I prayed you would. Paul & Milt kept telling me that it was going to be a tough fight, but they had a lot of faith in you and Mary Beth. As many times before, you two together, are a winning team beginning 38 years ago. Love you always, Mom

  27. Dear Stevie, Well you like "The Jeffersons" are movin on up. Remember that was Archie Bunkers' neighbor? We're sure you're very happy with the move. Of course we all expect the next move will be back to Malibu. We all know that you always liked to tell stories and other people looked towards you for great discriptions. Your next job is already set up for you. And boy have you a lot to tell!! Remember when in Kinston you were invited to functions, all our friends relied on you to remember everything that went on so you could report back to us. About who wore what and who was with whom. Boy, did our phone ring those days. Have you been eating regular food yet? I imagine physical therapy is tiring but very necessary. Knowing you the speech therapy will be a piece of cake. Again "one day at a time". Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt and Aunt Dottie

We thrive on every little bit of news, and kevell on each and every advancement.Aain "one day at a time'. Love, love, love always, Mom & Milt & Aunt Dottie

  29. Dear Stevie, So, you're back on the 6th floor. Mazel Tov!!!!! We sure the nurses are happy to have you back again. Are yu going to set up your desk and computer again? Are they working you too hard, you must be exhasted. What did they feed you today? Hope it was delicious and something you liked. How good are the therapist? Marlene put pictures of Dylan on the Facebook today. He was riding a bike for the first time. Delicious. It was good speaking to Greg tonight and he said you and he were enjoying talking together. I'm so happy that they are back in California. See, everything works out for the best. Aunt Dottie just spent at least one hour speaking to Joan about you. Honestly Steve, that's about what we all have been doing since you are in the hospital. That and praying for your complete recovery. Aunt Dottie gets a call from way down in Palm Springs almost every day from Bud and Lynn Smilay. We've become very popular. The phones and computers are busy. And we've been happy to be able to tell everyone that you are out of ICU and back up on the 6th floor. We've been taking "one day at a time" just as you have been doing. The prayers are for you and Mary Beth, because you are in this together and she's been wonderful. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  33. Dear Stevie, You had a busy day What with speaking to your cousin Judy, Aunt Dottie & us. More important you visited with Dylan, the talker. He sort of reminds the family of someone who's name start with S. He certainly seems to take after his poppa, right?

It's great that they realized what was causing the rash and high blood presure and took care of it. Now we hope that the two of you have a good nights sleep and rest.

That old saying "take one day at a time" really covers a lot of situations. I'm positive that you have a lot of catching up on mail and calls. That should keep you busy for a few days knowing you. Take it easy though, give yourself some breathing room. And Beth too. Like it or not, we'll be writing again tomorrow. 35. Dear Stevie, It was very nice speaking to your friend Jay today. Low and behold, Dave Jackson called and told us that you still had a tan, it doesn't surprise us at all. You have great friends. The saying goes "to have good friends you have to be a good friend". So that speaks well for you, right? Boy are you lucky to have such a wonderful caring wife. We don't have to tell you just how special she is. So I guess we can say that you are both lucky to have each other.

Here we go again, remember to "take one day at a time". Love, love, love always, Mom, MB1 & Aunt Dottie

  36. Dear Stevie, We're sure you missed us these last few days. The omputer "cashed". Here we are back again to nudge you, just what you look forward to each day. Thank you for your call, and letting us know how you walked the halls without holding on to anyone. And also the news that those tubes will gradually be removed. Bravo!!!! Wow...you finally had a good nights sleep, and so did Mary Beth. You both needed that very badly. Glad to hear that your friend Jeannie was visiting today and wlll spend the night with Mary Beth at the hotel. Steve, we are very proud of how you've handled this very difficult ordeal (with the help of Mary Beth). We all know that you are a fighter and you've certainly proved it again. How things work out for the best, having Greg and his family back home just when you really needed, and he's been there for you and Mary Beth.

Just always remember "one day at a time". It's surely working for you. Love, love, love always, Mom & MB1, & Aunt Dottie

  37. Hi Stevie, Just read Mary Beth's email to Aunt Dottie and we sort of had a good laugh. Thank G d you're back again and talking, talking, and talking. Even the doctors noticed it. What would they expect, you didn't speak for a month!!!!!!Knowing you we expected that, G d willing, you would make up for it. Full speed ahead...We realize that you are exhausted, but who wouldn't be? With all the theraphy and procedures going on each day I'm surprised that you can walk the halls. Joan is having problems with her cat right now, and you know how important Squeek is to them. She's been in two different vet hospitals in the last few days. Out here it the Old East it snowed on the first day of Spring. Not here in Newburgh though, even snow doesn't want to come here...
So it looks as if there will be a change in your living quarters in the not too distant future. Wonderful...... Again we're all so proud of your progress. Just keep it up and remember "take one day at a time". Love love, Love always, Mom, MB1 & Aunt Dottie

  38. Dear Stevie, Was great speaking to you before and you sounded good. So you had a busy day again. What with therapy and company you should certainly have a good nights sleep. Nothing new as yet on Joan's cat. They saw two different vets already and no definite prognosis. You know how important that cat is to Joan & George.

This next week should be an important one to you, we imagine. Hope the shoulder and arm situation starts to improve. It will, just remember "take one day at a time". Everyone is praying and pulling for you each and every minute of the day. Love, love, love always, Mom, MB1 & Aunt Dottie

  39. Dear Stevie, I'm on the phone right now speaking to Aunt Dottie and she just got off talking to you. You understand nothing is sacred between the Levy girls. Understand that you had a quiet Sunday and Mary Beth is massaging your legs right now. Boy, is there nothing that wife of yours won't do for you? And she's been with you already 38 years, I guess that's called "true love". It's been a quiet day here also. Oh, Milt did go for the laundry, and also put out garbage. He's exhausted he would have complained to you if he spoke to you. See what you missed? Nothing new with Squeek so far. She's eating a little
today and that makes Joan & George happy. Hope you both have a good nights rest and sleep. Remember "one day at a time". Love, love, love always, Mom. Milt & Aunt Dottie

  40. Dear Stevie, Well, it seems as if there's a lot going on as to when you will be leaving the hospital. You certainly have made unbelieveable progress in such a short period of time. We know it hasn't been a ball, but you've been so brave and we're so very proud of you. You and Mary Beth make a good team. You are always there for each other, and there's nothing you can't accomplish. It looks as if you will be in your own home celebrating your 38th wedding anniversary. What a gift......Mazel Tov......It seems like only yesterday, right?

Just remember even at home to "take one day at a time" and be patient and enjoy each and every day. Have a good nights rest and sleep. That goes for Mary Beth also. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  41. Dear Stevie, Well, as of our comversation early this evening, it's either Friday or Monday that you'll be heading home. Either one will be fine for you and Mary Beth and all of us. Glad that all went well down in the desert, and that Mary Beth drove the car back to the hospital. You sounded tired, but good. Sorry that they're ( the therapist) are working you so hard but all for a good reason. To get you back on your feet is their goal, and yours also. Not easy at all, but you're a fighter and they must know that.

It's getting warmer back here in the East. All of 50, but it's going to rain tonight and tomorrow. That's what the weather people are reporting. Who knows, they've been wrong a lot lately on both coasts.

Well, we're sure you're enjoying our daily blogs, we enjoy keeping in touch with you. With us the saying "out of sight, out of touch" just doesn't sit right. Which means you'll be hearing from us, whether you want to or not. WE'RE YOUR FAMILY!!!!!!!!

  42. Dear Steve & Mary Beth, Well, you have done it. Yes you have made it, and thank G d for that. Tomorrow you will be home again having fought a fantastic battle and won it. We know that you will be improving each and every day, and continuring to "take one day at a time". You've been very successful using that montra, so keep it up. When you find a good path the thing is to keep following it.
With the doctors' information that your MDA is in complete remission we all knew that if it could be done, you would do it because you both are fighters.
Now have a great night, and get ready for the trip home. We love you both very, very much. Also we want to be the first to wish you a VERY HAPPY & HEALTHY 38TH ANNIVERSARY, and many, many, many more. Love, love, love always, Mom & Milt & Aunt Dottie

It's wonderful, we're sure, that you can sleep in your own bed finally. Look out the window and see the sky, the greenery and Catalina. All in all, there's no place like home. You really fought a difficult battle, but you won. Now enjoy, relax, and "TAKE ONE DAY AT A TIME".

Have a good nights sleep and enjoy all your days at home. We all have so much to be thankful for, an we're with you every step of the way. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  44. Dear Steve & Mary Beth, Two days home and it's beem difficult. We assume you sort of expected time to settle in, but let's hope that's over with now, and good days are coming. If it were up to us you would be enjoying and relaxing at home already. What can we say other than "take one day at a time" and you'll get through this. It seems like nothing comes easy for the two of you, but that will change now we're sure. Your mother and Aunt & MB1 has spoken. We hope that you two get a good nights sleep tonight and that tomorrow when you see the doctors, the report will be good. Love, love, love Mom, Milt, Aunt Dottie

  45. Dear Steve & Mary Beth, Well you survived the weekend and the visit at the hospital today.....It's scarey, what the doctors, nurses and hospitals can do to a patient. Thank G d for our Mary Beth. We feel that all will go more smoothly from now on that you're home, and have all the medicines straightend out. You both sounded really much better on the phone tonight. Rosa sounded great, and it's good that she's there with the two of you. Happy that you could put shoes on, ready to do some tap dancing Steve? Remember "take one day at a time". Think about it, how one day makes a difference. Everyday will be better. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  46. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Early this evening you sounded much better. Glad your day was filled with friends and I really feel that being home and having people over is the best medicine for you. We hope that you finally both get a good nights rest and sleep.
We don't know exactly which days you will be going to the hospital or when the therapist will start coming to the house. Whenever, we're sure that it will help you improve. Again "take one day at a time". By the time you get around to reading these blogs you'll be ready to write again. Can't wait to read what you actually went through in your own words. We're still praying for you each and every day. So are so many other people. Sometime in the future we'll make a list and boy will you be surprised by some of the names. A lot of them are from the past. So we're praying that you both have a good night and only good days from now on. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  47. Dear Steve & Mary Beth, Well another day in our "take one day at a time" motra. At my Mah Jong game today the women just realized that you had been at the City of Hope Hospital and they said how lucky you were to be at the number one hospital. I agreed with them. Aunt Dottie just told me that you spoke to Cousin Judy today. You're already catching up on all your phone calls. Rosa sounds great and she's so happy to be there with you both, able to be of help. It's great that Greg, Marlene & Dylan Lewis are living close by so that they can visit you often. I hear that you will be getting a visit from Aunt Dottie and Cousin Joan, when you can fit it into your schedule. It's great to be so popular. Well I guess there's no more news so I'll close with Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  48. Dear Steve & Mary Beth, It sounded like old times calling your home and Rosa answering the phone. Steve, you really sounded better again today, and that was after your visit to the hospital. I heard you even ask if there was another meatball, so hopefully your appetite is slowly coming back. "One day at a time", right? There's no new news here today other then we received a refrigerated package from Ohama Steaks. Milt was complaining to Paul about my not making steaks. So, I guess Paul sent us six beautiful steaks and a Chocalot cake to keep him quiet. Now I have to make the steaks. We hope that the two of you have a good night. The rest and sleep will do you both a lot of good. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

He looked so serious and adorable. I even sent them on to Judy and Joan, Ben, Suzanne and Paul. Only Aunt Dottie didn't get them because she doesn't have a computer. Well, what can I say. In the past I did send her a picture of Dylan. As far as you two are concerned, we hope this weekend was much better than last weekend. Your cream chesse and jelly sandwich sounded good to both Aunt Dottie & me. It seems like an improvement, the taste buds seem to be coming back. Well, no new news from here today, just remember "take one day at a time". Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  52. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Another day and it seems as if you're getting a little better each day. At least you're sleeping a little more, and that's great for both of you. We called David up and he said something aout your hair being red....what's that all about? I'm trying to think if perhaps someone in the families had red hair, but so far Aunt Dottie and I can't remember anyone with that color hair. I'm forwarding the pictures of Dylan in the gym to David and Karen. We called to wish them a happy passover. I also called Mike Randell and left a message on his phone wishing them a happy passover. We hope your day at the hospital tomorrow will be a short and good visit. Remember "take one day at a time". Also, I called Greg and told him that we loved the pictures of Dylan that we saw on Facebook. I personally think he looks more and more like you Mary Beth. I alos see Greg in him. I keep hoping that I'll see me in him. That's a joke!!!!!!Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt, & Aunt Dottie

  53. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, The news was great today. You spoke to Milt and Aunt Dottie and brightened their day with your report. I know Milt told you that I was out playing Mah Jong and I lost all of $.20. Sorry I wasn't here for the good news, but between Milt and your Aunt I got the full report. Now we hope the rest of the week is as satisfying. Glad your nights are improving also. It rained here and was cold today. I hear your weather was better. Lucky you people out West. Remember "take one day at a time". It seems to be working, thank G d. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  54. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Well, you had company today...THE FAMILY PAID YOU A VISIT! Milt and I tried not to call you when they were to be there, but knowing us, we had to. We were sort of jealous. The report we got from Aunt Dottie was a great one. She said you looked good and are definitely on the mend. When you went into the hospital Joan immediately started to knit you a hat and scraf, and today she finally was able to give it to you. Another Nanny.
Having Rosa there with the two of you is a blessing. She's so very happy to be there and watch you getting better every day. So just remember "take one day at a time". It's really working. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  55. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Well, did Dylan bake a cake? You all sounded so very happy to Milt and me, being together. See, things do work out for the better. Glad you're enjoying your cousin Joan's gift. She was so anxious to make it for you. Good to have cousins like her, and Judy. Aunt Dottie and I compose these brillant compositions every evening so you know that you're both always in our hearts and thoughts. You may call it something different when you finally get to reading them. Maybe "two pain in the necks", but you'll never be able to say that you never heard from us. Right? Happy Passover and many, many more to come. Remember "one day at a time". Love, love, love you both always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  56. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Well another holiday has come and not gone yet. At the Shorells the past two evenings, the company, food and conversation was great. What a cook and baker Alicia Shorell is, reminds us of you Mary Beth. Aunt Dottie just told me that she spoke to you today, and I told her that I had called you also. In the last pictures we received, you all look great and happy, and of course that made us happy also. Glad that the doctor today gave you a good report. Hope the weekend wil be a relaxing one for the two of you. Remember "take one day at a time". Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

  57. Dear Steve & Mary Beth, Friday night and the candles are lite and the prayers were said. Even though Im here in the East and no earthquakes here, I still put the candle sticks in the sink for safty reasons. Milt always teases me about it, but what can I say....it's a habit and I'm too old to change. Really don't want to.

Was happy to hear that Mike and his mom visited today.Remember the holiday that I shared with you and them? Good memories.

I keep looking at the pictures Beth sent from Wednesday evening with the 5 of you celebrating Passover. Very, very special ones. Of course Dylan Lewis really made that evening special for all of you. Those pictures made the holiday better for us.
Aunt Dottie is out for the evening, so I don't have her on the phone while writing. She's my co- writer usually because I know she wants to be. This evening call is one I have made to her for years now, besides my morning and afternoon call. Thank G d for the invention of the telephone, right?

We hope that you both have a good weekend, and that this next week will be one in which you will continue to make progress. I'm so very proud of the two of you. Thanks for being my children. Love, love, love always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie

Even out here was clear, not warm, no snow. We hope that your visit to the hospital tomorrow shows that there has been more imporvement. And of course, Rosa will be back to help. 61. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Hope you had a restful day today. You really sounded better today when we spoke to you, and that was after your physical therapy. Glad to hear that you are reading again. Another step forward and nearer to your goal. I enjoy speaking to Rosa, she's always encouraging. She's done a great job with raising her daughter. Well, tomorrow is the last day of Passover for this year. I hope next year we can all celebrate it together. Something that we can all look forward to. Remember "take one day at a time". 62. Dear Stevie & Mary Beth, Well, you had an outing today and that certainly is a step in the right direction. Hurray for the two of you!!! Your conversation with us, Steve, was most interesting and enlightning. You answered many of the things that we have been wondering about, all of us. What an experience for each of you, and we are looking forward to that book that you two must write together. We know it will be a best seller, and also an eye opener. We feel that it will definitely help others in the future.
O.K. now down to business. Since as of today, you have not read any of the blogs we have been writing to you every single day since Feb 3rd, and since we now speak to you everyday, this may be the last blog we are going to annoy you with for awhile. We're sure you are very sad about that decision. Sure!!!!!!We've come a long way haven't we all? A very happy long way. If you want to have us write nightly, we would be happy to do so. Aunt Dottie and I speak every night at bedtime anyway. Just remember "take one day at a time". We just want to say a very big "Thank You" to our Mary Beth. We all know that she helped pull you through. Now we ask the two of you to try and relax and enjoy the many, many good years ahead. Of course we expect to be included in those years. Love, love, love always & always, Mom, Milt & Aunt Dottie
P.S. Signing off. If you should need help in the writing department, We're available.....
